Sometimes helping is just a few clicks away

Here in my area we had a water main break and it resulted low water pressure and a boil water advisory. An inconvenience, sure. But when one has the option of going to the corner store for a gallon of water or dropping by a family member's house to grab a shower, it's not such a big deal.

It did get me thinking of those who don't have those options.

I came across this blog recently. Here's a guy who's trying to get water to people who desperately need it to survive. All it takes is a moment to register and a click to vote for his project--less time than it would take you to get a glass of water from your tap.

I find it amazing to live in an age where I can help people on the other side of the world and never leave my desk.

Have a great day and take a moment to appreciate what you have.

Using your talents to help others can mean many things…

The SCC was founded on the idea that everyone has something they can contribute to the world. Sometimes we use those talents to give to a great cause and sometimes we just lend a helping hand out to someone in need.

Sometimes it’s the talents you’d least expect that are of the greatest use.

For instance, would you ever think of using Taekwondo to fight autism? Or that that the person you might need most might be the repo man?

This year my niece inspired me by participating in a kick-a-thon to fight autism. Her Taekwondo school organized the event in support of this worthy cause and students young and old were able to contribute their talent by getting sponsors to support them as they did something they all knew how to do well. Kick, kick, kick!

And as for the repo-man? My husband and I were out with his SCUBA students this past weekend when word went out that a powerful storm was approaching. It was advised that everyone pack up and head for cover. As it turned out, one couple locked their keys in the car and the auto-club was not likely to make it to them before the storm. Now, as a rule, I find SCUBA divers to be a helpful bunch. Some of us tried to help the couple gather their things and bring them to the shelter of the park facilities. Then one person stepped forward with the skills (and the tools) to open their car.

When he’s not diving, he works as a repo-man. Within minutes he had their car open and the couple was able to pack up and get to safety.

The moral of the story, when we think of offering our talents and skills in service to others there are many who might think that they have nothing to offer. But everyone can do something and often it’s the skills you wouldn’t think of that are the most helpful.

What talent or skill could you use to make the world a better place?
