Valentine for the Heart

Valentine's Day is upon us again and people young and old are exchanging hearts as tokens of love and affection. Since hearts are on so many minds today, I think it's a good time to make a suggestion that is, not only heart related, but can also be a way to show you care--learn CPR.

CPR is easy to learn, it can be done in one class and it gives you the knowledge to act in an emergency and possibly help someone you love. And if there are children in your life, then learning infant and child CPR is a must!

This may seem to be a strange topic for a blog that focuses largely on volunteerism. But I believe that making a contribution is not always about what we do, but what we take the time to learn, as well.  And I believe that everyone should learn CPR and basic first aid (AED too, if you if possible).

Hopefully, CPR is something you learn and never have to use. But isn't that better than not having the knowledge if the need arises? And think about what happens if you're the one who needs help. Wouldn't you want the people around you to have taken the time to learn CPR?

So show your friends and family you care and sign up for a CPR course. Better yet, make it a family thing, or even get some friends or colleagues together and take a class as a group!

If you're already CPR certified, make a commitment to take a refresher course. (You may find the recommendations have changed since you learned.) Let the hearts of Valentine's Day be a yearly reminder to keep your skills sharp.

Wishing you and yours a happy Valentine's Day,

Cristina Kollet
